The Most Common Discipline Mistakes Parents Make
Read everything you can get your hands on," says Donna Bozzo, a national parenting expert who has published various books, including "Fidget Busters 50 Ways to Keep Kids Busy While You Get Things Done. This is your new job in a way, so create your own training. Also, beg, borrow and steal from any parent, teacher, etc., who you think has it going on when it comes to earning respect with children and shamelessly copy them!
- FAMILY MINDED

The Puzzle of Disciplining Your Child
Donna Bozzo recommends creating a family mantra. “Parents should do this to establish the direction of the family,” Bozzo says, admitting she got the idea from her brother. “The family mantra should cover a lot of things, like acting out at the movies or smoking when the parents aren’t around; it should also apply to behavior on social media.” Bozzo says she repeats the family mantra
“Make the Family Proud” every time her three daughters leave the house. Another family uses the mantra “Make Good Decisions” and has the caveat that if the children or their friends do not make good decisions, the children are to call their parents immediately and the parents will offer a safe haven. Bozzo said, “This shows respect for the kids and lets them figure out their behavior.”
Guidelines for creating a family mantra include: short, sweet, broad, effective, and as automatic as “brush your teeth.”

Parenting Expert Donna Bozzo suggests that finding ways to include children in the process of blending the family is the way toward acceptance of a new stepmom. “Include the kids in the wedding ceremony. Instead of a bride and groom cake topper, how about a full-family cake topper, with kids in tow?” says Bozzo, who suggests that families find fun ways to make things work going forward. “Think of your new blended family as a kind of soup where different members of the family add their own favorite ingredients to the pot. Like peanut butter and jelly sometimes the sum of two (or more) parts, is greater than the whole,” says Bozzo.
